Types of security bars and crossbar locks

Anyone who has decided to buy a crossbar lock or security bar usually faces the question: what types of security bar are there? We have put together a brief overview of the types of crossbar lock available on the market.

1. Security bar with push button

Among the most convenient types of security bar are locks that are opened by means of a mechanical push button, meaning no conventional key is used at all. This type of crossbar lock can only be locked from the inside. Security bars with push-button locking are ideal for doors that are not used often, such as cellar doors, doors at the back of the house or garage doors. They also provide additional security while you are at home, giving you an extra level of protection, especially at night. A major advantage, of course, is that crossbar locks with a push button need no key. The crossbar can be opened or closed conveniently with a single movement, and there is no risk of losing a key or of one breaking off in the lock.

2. Crossbar lock secured with a key from the inside

Besides crossbar locks with a push button, there are also models that can likewise only be locked from the inside but use a key to do so. With this type of security bar there is a lock housing on each side of the bar, and both can be locked with a single key. As these crossbar locks can also only be locked from the inside, they are best used in areas that are used less frequently. Crossbar locks with inside locking are often found on cellar doors.

3. Security bar secured with a key from the inside and outside

Probably the most widely used security bars are those that can be opened and locked from both the inside and the outside. They are found above all on frequently used doors such as front doors and main entrance doors. During installation, the crossbar lock is fitted with a modern lock cylinder so that it can be locked like a normal door. The advantage of these security bars is obvious: because the bar can also be locked from the outside, your flat or home is protected far better while you are away than with a simple door cylinder. Especially in areas with a high burglary rate or in large cities such as Berlin, the police recommend using security bars like these, because at best they prevent the break-in altogether, as burglars lack the necessary equipment, or they delay it for so long that the attempt is abandoned because of passers-by.

4. Crossbar lock for doors with a door guard

Crossbar locks can be fitted with a practical additional function. While the normal standard crossbar lock bars the door completely, there are also crossbar locks that can be fitted with a so-called door guard. This door guard allows the door to be opened just a crack without opening it fully. When the doorbell rings, you can first see who is at the door without compromising your security. The door guard is connected directly to the crossbar lock by a small link and can be used flexibly.
